As a Grace member for nearly 50 years, I consider myself blessed!
The first time my husband and I visited Grace back in 1968, Bishop James Thomas led the worship service…wow, what a glorious experience it was for this small town Georgia girl!
Being a newlywed and also new to Des Moines, I was overwhelmed by the love and support of the congregation, the ministers, Louise Augustine and Elizabeth Circle as they all took me under their wings.
Throughout the years I suffered a few trails and tribulations but, in true GUMC style, I found love and forgiveness at Grace and have made many lifelong friends. When I was diagnosed with cancer in 1973, these same wonderful people were by my side.
I’ve taught Sunday School and Bible School at Grace and was the director of the Drop-In Center for over 10 years. I’ve spent many hours in the kitchen helping prepare and serve meals, as well as making costumes for the Youth Dinner Drama. I was ever so honored to be selected to chaperone the youth trip to England in the mid 1980’s. I’m currently an active member of Anna Circle and I serve on the Kitchen Committee.
Volunteering at the Free Clinic at GUMC, specifically for the free meal associated with the Clinic, has been a heartwarming experience for me during the past six years. Again, I find myself overwhelmed by the love and generosity of Grace. Each week, individuals from all walks of life come to our Church for a nutritious meal and unique fellowship. I feel I receive much more from this program than what I give and I truly consider the weekly guests as my extended family.
Yes indeed, I’m truly blessed!
