When Jesus was asked what commandment matters the most, the Shema is how Jesus answers. What matters most, Jesus says, is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. The Shema is a Jewish prayer found in the book of Deuteronomy. The second greatest commandment, according to Jesus, is like the first, love your neighbor as you love yourself (which is also a quote from the Hebrew Scriptures). Often, when we think about what matters most, we fly over love the Lord your God with all your heart, should, and strength, and jump right into love your neighbor as yourself. It’s a great place to start and throughout February we will see how deeply connected these ideas are. But for this series of sermons on the Shema, we’re going to pause and wonder, what does it really mean to love God? Is it a feeling? Is it an emotional attachment? What does it mean to love God with your heart, soul, and strength? Join us at Grace this February as we learn from the Shema.
