Artist of the Month: Alice Guerrero

Stop by the Activity Center to see the incredible talent of Alice Guerrero! Alice discovered her passion for art in fifth grade, inspired by her teacher, Mrs. Goodwin, at Greenwood Elementary School in Des Moines. This early encouragement led her to pursue art further at Tech High School in Des Moines and then study at Grandview University, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Louisiana State University, where she earned a master’s degree in fine art.

While in Louisiana, Alice faced challenges, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and PTSD, as well as a period of homelessness. During this difficult time, an old friend from Des Moines, Mary Rae McElroy, reminded her of the artist within by giving her a drawing pad and pencils.

Today, Alice’s work spans many mediums—drawing, painting, block printing, wood carving, and ceramics. Influenced by artists like Paul Cezanne, Robert Henri, Vincent Van Gogh, and M.C. Escher, her creativity is constantly evolving. She describes her art journey as that of a “voyager,” exploring uncharted waters with each project, connecting deeply with her audience along the way. Whether capturing an idea in her ever-present notebook or working on a larger piece, Alice’s art embodies her unique perspective and resilience.

Alice believes that everyone is an artist in their own way, each on a journey of self-expression. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the inspiring work of Alice Guerrero, a true artist of life and spirit.
