The Grace Free Medical Clinic

Whether you’re an EMT or a nurse—or simply a layperson who’d like to volunteer your time in non-medical ways—come join our efforts to help those in our community get the healthcare they need.

Since 2010, the Grace United Methodist Church Free Clinic, affiliated with Free Clinics of Iowa, provides free healthcare for the whole family. We serve anyone who comes through our doors: Whether you’re old, young ,or in-between, whether you’re insured, uninsured ,or underinsured, or if you simply want to come by because our hours of operation don’t require time off work, you are always welcome.

Here’s How It Works:

We’re open each Tuesday evening with registration from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Patients are seen from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No appointments are taken, and all services are free, provided by volunteers.

Services Include:

  • Routine physical exams for adults and children
  • School, sports, camp and employment physicals
  • Acute illness and injury care
  • Chronic disease management
  • Diabetes testing and education
  • Medication assistance
  • Referrals
  • Note: vaccinations are not available at the free clinic.

Stay for Dinner:

A free hot meal is served from 5:00 to 7 p.m. to anyone, not just clinic patients.

Volunteer with Us!

If you’re a healthcare professional and wish to volunteer, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll be working alongside other physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals who volunteer their time. Des Moines University students also come weekly for a learning experience.

However, you don’t need to be a healthcare professional to help us with our Free Medical Clinic—we always need volunteers to help greet and register clients, input data, and help serve our free Tuesday night dinner.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact the church office at 255-2131, and the message will be given to the appropriate person, who will contact you. Generally, Clinic volunteers commit to one Tuesday night a month.

Your Donations Appreciated

To keep our clinic doors open, generous businesses, individuals, and organizations provide contributions, which are tax deductible. If you would like to contribute, please send a check to Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove Ave., Des Moines, IA, 50311. Note on your check that your donation is for the Free Medical Clinic.
